Harvey Seymour Sussman was born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 3, 1923. He served with the Office of Strategic Services in Washington, D.C., London, Burma, Ceylon, and Southeast Asia from 1944 to 1945. Sussman was a member of the Army Specialized Training Program at Yale from 1943 to 1944 and studied the Malayan language. He graduated from Yale in 1947. Unit 3900 of the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) was established by the War Department at Oregon State College in March 1943.
