Ledger, 1888-1896.

Ledger book for Cortez Mines, Ltd., a major gold and silver mining company in the Cortez Mining District, Lander County, Nevada. The ledger records accounts for Cortez Mines, Ltd. from 1888 to 1896, tracing financial transactions and operations of a complex mining organization that included a mine, mill, store, and boarding house. Entries include itemized lists of purchased mining materials, as well as debits for salaries, sundries, boarding house costs, a doctor's salary, and transactions with the Southern Pacific Company, other named companies, and local individuals. A list on p. 13 itemizes capital stock for the company, detailing worth of a mill, businesses, and real estate valued at $1,500,000. The list is dated October 1, 1888, and includes the names and acreage for the twenty-nine mines that amalgamated under the company. Named mines include the Garrison, the Arctic, and the St. Louis. Notes in the ledger also reference the transfer of funds to a "London Office." Several of the last entries in November of 1896 record the transfer of funds to Simeon Wenban to settle the accounts of the corporation. One entry also references the re-organization of the Tenabo Mill and Mining Company.
