Collection consists of thirty-one manuscript letter, documents, and filing items, dating from 1858 to 1860. Primarily Jacob Forney's and John Cradlebaugh's correspondence with the Office of Indian Affairs, as well as supporting documents compiled by the Office during the investigation of Cradlebaugh's charges against Forney. Series I, Jacob Forney Correspondence, consists of Forney's official letters and reports, addressed to successive Commissioners in the Office of Indian Affairs, Charles E. Mix, Alfred Burton Greenwood, and James William Denver. Enclosures include copies of documents created by other individuals, including reports that Indian agents, George W. Armstrong, George Snow, and Garland Hurt, prepared about the Spanish Fork Indian farm and the Sanpete Indian farm, as well as receipts from Indian agent F. Dodge. Statements related to a controversial purchase of "Indian goods" from Salt Lake City merchants Hockaday, Burr & Co. are present, along with a single letter to William E. Carter, whom Forney wrote after his dismissal in 1860, which details the circumstances leading up to his removal. Series II, John Cradlebaugh Correspondence, consists of five letters from Cradlebaugh to the Office of Indian Affairs, concerning his allegations against Superintendent Forney. Includes Cradlebaugh's official written statement against Forney, and letters that Cradlebaugh wrote providing the names and localities of potential witnesses for the investigation. Series III, Other Documents, consists of documents that the Office of Indian Affairs gathered and produced during the inquiry into Cradlebaugh's charges. Includes an affidavit from Agent Hurt, and a statement about Forney's clerk, Isaac Neff Henry, from his former employer, B. F. Bell. Kintzing Pritchette's summary report for the Office of Indian Affairs, prepared in March 1860, is also present.
