Letters relating to mining investments in New Mexico, 1868-1889.

4 ALS (10 p.). An ALS from Thomas Wood, Steck's father-in-law, dated 1868 Sep 13, relates family news and speaks of "the Mining Co." An ALS from S. B. Elkins, dated 1880 Apr 14, concerns "conveying water from the Pecos to the placers" and mentions belief in a vein of copper in the ground. A second ALS from S. B. Elkins, addressed to W. J. Wood on December 3, 1880, relates Elkins's surprise on learning of Steck's death earlier in the fall, and references Steck's ownership of stock in the Pecos Water Co. The final ALS in the collection, dated 1889 May 3, is from W. T. Thornton to E. Andrews in Santa Fe, concerning finances, mining and property development.

Steck, Michael, 1818-1880

Michael Steck, born on October 6, 1818 in Hughesville, Pennsylvania to John and Elizabeth Steck. Graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1844. Appointed Superintendent of Indian Affairs for New Mexico Territory in 1863. After retiring from the Indian Service, Steck speculated on mining ventures in New Mexico with Stephen B. Elkins, who later became a U.S. Senator for West Virginia. Steck died in Winchester, Virginia, on October 6, 1880. From the description of Let...
