William Van Deventer papers, 1843-1900.

The papers consist primarily of incoming family and business correspondence that document William Van Deventer's transcontinental business dealings, particularly with his brothers in St. Louis and their firm, P.L. & H. Van Deventer & Co. The letters, the bulk of which date from the late 1840s through the 1870s, document Van Deventer's sales of men's clothing to western clients; his interest in investing in western real estate in Colorado, Kansas, and Missouri; and investments in a Montana cattle herd, in railroad stocks, in the New Haven Arms Company, and in Utah and Colorado mines. Business correspondents begin writing from western locations at various dates: from San Francisco in 1851; from Denver and Nebraska City in 1866; from Topeka and Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1867; and from Salt Lake City between 1869 and 1870. The papers also include correspondence related to litigation over St. Louis real estate, local news, and family matters. Letters from Van Deventer's mother, wife, and sister-in-law as well as his brothers are present. Other correspondents include John Fletcher Darby; Henry M. Field; John S. McCune, a St. Louis attorney; Trusten Polk, who wrote regarding the settlement of Peter Van Deventer's estate, 1869-1871; and Alexander Majors, Van Deventer's mining investment partner. Majors's ten letters to Van Deventer date from 1865 to 1872 and include news of his wife's health, personal travel, and updates related to Van Deventer's mining investments in Utah as well as the Van Deventer family company's investment in Montana cattle. The papers also include a brief letter from William Hepburn Russell, dated 1869 Dec 28. Other papers include an undated address book with "W. J. Blackwell" in ink on the cover; bills, receipts and customer orders; bookkeeping records; two blank deed forms, both from 1870, for a plot of land in St. Louis; newspaper clippings; and two legal documents.
