Typed transcript of testimony from the United States v. A. E. Humphreys, signed and dated by the court's shorthand reporter, Miss M. U. Shields, on March 18, 1911. The hearing took place on March 1-2, 1911, before Joseph Hamilton, County Clerk for the County of Esmeralda, Nevada. Hamilton also was serving as Commissioner of Goldfield, Nevada. A. O. White represented the Government's case; Frank E. Wheeler represented Mr. Humphreys. Witnesses for the Land Office were F. O. Martin, Mineral Inspector for the State of Nevada; Ephriam H. Bush, a Goldfield resident and carpenter; and William Hamilton, another Goldfield resident. Witnesses for Humphreys were James Faulkner and R. A. Hopper, two Goldfield District miners. Transcript includes direct and cross-examinations for all the witnesses, as well as the introduction of exhibits.

F. (Frederick) Oskar Martin was born in Mittweida, Germany in 1871. He came to the United States in 1891 after spending several years at sea. Upon his arrival in the US, he worked as a mining engineer and geologist in the mines of Alaska, California, Idaho, and Montana. He studied at George Washington University from 1900-02, worked for the US Departments of Agriculture (1901-05) and Interior (1909-19), and also spent a year working on the Panama Canal.
