[Logbook of the Barwell], 1789-1791.

Manuscript ship's journal in a copperplate hand, consisting of entries in printed logbook form pages. The journal, probably kept by the captain of the Barwell, Thomas Welladvice, covers the 1790-91 voyage of the Barwell from England out to Bombay and Whampoa (port of Canton, now Guangzhou), and the return. Daily entries include weather, wind, latitude and longitude measurements, ship sightings, and occasional details of life aboard, such as the punishment of sailors for theft or the reduction of the water ration. Also included are lists of the outward bound cargo and the quantity of water stored in the hold; a list of the crew and the seven passengers, including two women; and a list of all East India Company ships "taken up for the year 1790" identified by name, managing owner, officers, "parsons," and destinations. This followed by a list of all ships at Whampoa while the Barwell was there, including five "Botany Bay," six American, and one "Moorish" ship.
