Album of documents pertaining to the life and execution of the forger William Dodd. Includes ALS from Dodd to Samuel Richardson, dated June 16, 1752, with a draft of Richardson's reply; AL in the third person from Dodd in Newgate to his publisher Charles Dilly, 1777 Mar 23; AL in the third person from Sir Herbert Croft to Monsieur Schonberg describing Dodd's execution, 1777 Jun 28; and an ALS from Weedon Butler to Nap[thali] Hart, 1799 Nov 21. Also includes contemporary newspaper clippings concerning the biography, trial and execution of Dodd; a chapter of an unidentified book (pp. 196-212) headed "Dr. Dodd, for Forgery"; and engraved portraits of Dodd.

William Dodd (1729-1777) attended the University of Cambridge, and was ordained as a minister in 1752. He published a wide variety of works from 1747 onward, including poetry, a novel, theological writings, and his most successful work, The Beauties of Shakespeare (1752). In 1767, he founded Pimlico Chapel in London behind Buckingham House, in an effort to attract royal patronage. Dodd grew increasingly desperate for money to pay debts.
