Manuscript, in a single hand, of transcripts of orders issued to Captain Eliab Harvey (1758-1830), captain of H.M.S. Valiant, in service in the West Indies. The orders, sent from Sir Peter Parker, Sir Hyde Parker, Sir John Thomas Duckworth, and Sir Richard Rodney Bligh (1737-1821), concern such topics as impressment, signals, court martials, and battle orders. One order commands Harvey to provision his ships "with all species except Bees, of which she is to have as much as she can conveniently stow and to be supplied with Wine or Spirits in lieu of the remainder," while another orders him "not to impress American Seamen from Vessels belonging to the United States of America, and that the Officers so employed do pay the strictest Attention to Protections that may appear to them to be authentic." In another order, as the result of a court martial of one of the seamen under his command, he is "hereby required & directed to cause the said Michael Supple to be brought up on the Quarter Deck...you are to cause the said sentence to be put into execution, by hanging the said Michael Supple by the Neck at the Foresaid Arm of His Majesty's Ship under your Command and till he is dead."
