[Commonplace book], [late 17th to mid 18th century].

Manuscript on paper, in two hands, of a collection of about 150 poems. Many are satirical, including A Satyr On Wedlock & Women; several poems by John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester; a prose essay titled The Character of a Quaker; and several attributed to members of Oxford, such as On Pope Joan, By A Gentleman Of Christ Church in Oxford; and Verses Spoke By Mr Boles of New Colledge Terra Filius in the Year 1682, Upon Mr. Jacob Allestrey of Christ Church His Brother Terra Fillius. Several pages of poems with later dates appear in another hand at the end of the manuscript; these include a serious poem titled On The Death Of Her Sacred Majesty Queen Caroline as well as numerous satirical verses such as An Epilogue made & Spoken By Colley Cibber, Esq., On His Acting Nykin In The Old Batchelor; and Upon Reading the Dunciad.
