Papers pertaining to Robert Abbott, 1643-1665.

Collection of 25 letters and other documents, in multiple secretary hands, pertaining primarily to Abott's complicity in the Waller Plot, though the collection also contains several documents concerning his later financial activities. Documents concerning the Waller Plot consist mainly of petitions to have the judgments against him reversed, such as petitions to release him from prison and to lift the sequestration of his seized property; other items include receipts for various taxes and fines paid by Abbott; a valuation of his seized property; and a certificate confirming Abbott's having taken the Covenant, signed by Henry Scobell. Also in the collection are a copy of his father's will; receipts and bonds, including one acknowledging a sum of money paid by Sir Robert Clayton; and several business letters, one written in 1665, referring to the plague.

Robert Abbott (fl. 1643-1665) was a scrivener of Cornhill, London, who was one of the conspirators in the "Waller Plot," a plot in 1643 to seize London from the Parliamentary Army and return it to King Charles I. The plot, however, was discovered, and its conspirators arrested. Though Abbott was initially sentenced to death, he was pardoned, and eventually became a financially successful gentleman. Robert Clayton was born in Northamptonshire in 1629. He became an apprentice to his uncle who was a London scrivener where he became acquainted with fellow apprentice Alderman John Morris. They both went on to become successful businessmen and to establish the bank, Clayton & Morris Co. Clayton entered politics representing several wards depending on Whig favour.
