Contents include copies of documents relating to visit of Charles I (1600-49) to the Spanish court in 1623; "The Commodities and Discommodities of undertaking the receiving of Rochell" [1627]; Sir Griffin Markham's (1564?-1644?) letter of farewell to his wife and his confession; "Instructions given to Mr. Anthony Mildemay sent unto Duke Casmin the 11th of July 1578" by William Borroke, 10th Baron Cobham (1527-97) and Sir Francis Walsingham (1530?-90); and "the Manner of Proceeding against the Sco. Queen" [1586].

Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587), also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland, was queen of Scotland from 1542 to 1567. Through her husband Francis II, King of France, she was also briefly queen consort of France (1559-1560). Mary was the daughter of James V of Scotland and through him the grand-daughter of Margaret Tudor, elder sister of Henry VIII; as such she had a legitimate claim to the throne of England as well.
