Letter booke, February 1678 to October 1683.

Contemporary MS copy. The major portion of these letters are reports to the Secretary of the Admiralty and to the Secretary of State. Secretaries of the Admiralty included are: Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) Thomas Hayter and John Brisbane; Secretaries of State are Sir Henry Coventry (1619-86) and Sir Leoline Jenkins (1623-85). Other letters contain orders for captains of ships in Herbert's squadron and requisitions for provisions, etc., from merchants in Cadiz and Tangier. The letters provide detailed accounts of naval battles, the Treaty with Algiers (1683), personal rivalries and animosity, and the hardships of waging war in Levant.

Richard Howe, Earl Howe, was born in London, England, on March 19, 1726, the son of Emanuel Scrope Howe (1699-1735) and Mary Sophia Charlotte von Kielmansegg (1703-1782).
