The proceedings of the House of Commons 1678, [ca. 1679].

Manuscript, in a single secretary hand, of a relation of Parliamentary proceedings from 21 October 1678 to the dissolution of parliament on 24 January 1678/9. The bulk of the manuscript focuses on the Popish Plot fabricated by Titus Oates, recording summaries of testimonies by Oates; Ezerel Tonge; and William Bedloe concerning the murder of Edmund Berry Godfrey and accusations against various nobles and members of the royal household. The manuscript also records anti-Catholic bills and orders passed in the House, including a bill hindering Catholics from sitting in Parliament and orders that Justices of the Peace for Middlesex and the City of Westminster issue warrants for apprehending Benedictine monks. The volume contains repeated requests by Parliament to King Charles II to increase the safety of his person; the accolades and favors granted to Oates; and concludes with the King's speech proroguing Parliament due to his ill health.
