Manuscript, in a single secretary hand, of copies of correspondence to and from Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, regarding his actions in Ireland in 1599. The manuscript begins with a letter from Bacon to Essex after Essex's censure in 1599, suggesting the possibility of Essex returning to Queen Elizabeth I's favor and urging Essex to be ready to take up private life if the queen so wishes. The letter is followed by Essex's reply to Bacon; a description of Essex's discussions with Henry Wriothsley, Earl of Southampton concerning their rebellion; a letter from Essex to the Queen; and An apology of the Earle of Essex against those which falsely and maliciously taxe him to be the onelye hinderance of the peace...1598, dedicated to Anthony Bacon. The apology is similar to that printed by Richard Bradocke, London 1603, but with copyist's errors and no paragraphing. Laid in with the manuscript is a copy, on a separate sheet, of an eyewitness account of Essex's death, 25 Feb 1600/1, and a copy of a letter from the Lord Keeper to Essex.
