The manner and fforme off the examinacion and death of William Earle of Gowrie...the 3 of May...1584, [Scotland], [ca. 1620].

Manuscript, in two hands, of a description of the trial and execution for treason of William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie. The manuscript narrates the accusations against Gowrie for conspiring to imprison and destroy King James VI and his mother, Mary; and Gowrie's rebuttals, including his response to an accusation of witchcraft in "dealing with one Macklyne, a sorcerer." The manuscript then describes his condemnation, his final speech on the scaffold, and how his head was stricken off but sewed to his body again before his burial. The first 6 folios are copied in one hand; the last folio is in a different hand.
