The dramatic works of John Martin, 1835-1837.

Manuscripts, in a single hand, of a collection of twelve plays and one "poetical address," both serious and comic. The first volume contains eight plays, prefaced by an introduction in which the author explains where each play was performed. Two entries, titled My man and the barber and the poetical address "to be spoken by Miss Eliza Holmes...on the occasion of her father's benefit," were performed at the Royal Fitzroy Theatre; the other plays were performed in drawing rooms. Each play contains a list of the names of those who first performed in it, often including John Martin and Margaret Martin. At the ends of several of the plays are staging diagrams. The second volume, labeled "Vol. Four" on the title page, contains four plays, prefaced by an introduction in which the author explains the circumstances of each play's composition and notes that none of these plays was performed publicly. The contents include The bigot sister, "an original serious drama" which the author hopes the reader will not find too religious; a musical piece titled Love's vicissitudes; Fairly hit and fairly miss'd, "an original farce"; and Ever change-ing, "a monopologue." Both volumes also contain numerous engravings of scenes and portraits.
