The manuscript also includes more serious and elegiac poems such as On mortality; Werter's last letter to Charlotte; and On the death of my beloved child, Frederick John, who was born on September 1st 1855; and died August 27th 1856; the latter poem is dated September 1, 1756. A poem titled An appeal for Poland, dated 1831, exhorts the British and French to come to the aid of Polish soldiers revolting against Russian rule; other topical poems include On the accession of Queen Victoria; and To James Simpson Esq, after hearing his lectures on education. A poem on Prince Charles Edward after the Battle of Culloden is annotated with historical information about the event; two poems are purported to be based on Chinese legends; and numerous poems are in Latin. Though the title page establishes the date of the manuscript as 1842, the individual compositions are dated from 1826 to 1870.
