Verses, 1803.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of 29 original verses, primarily sentimental or lighthearted, by French. Many of the poems are annotated with the circumstances of their composition, and many are occasional poems addressed to friends. The volume includes several elegies, including an elegy occasioned by the author's seeing a stone seat in Cumberland and another to Sir Francis Burdett with a drawing bequeathed as a memorial by the author's father. Other poems include Lines addressed to the Duchess of Devonshire on her losing an eye, and an inscription for Erasmus Darwin, "author of the Botanic Garden"; as well as poems on spring and love. Several verses are addressed to female friends on their birthdays or as accompaniments to gifts sent to them, while more lighthearted poems include a sonnet written to an old coat and a sonnet written to a toadstool. Also written on numerous pages are provisional poem titles in pencil.
