Epistles to William Hodges, R.A., [ca. 1797].

Holograph verse epistle written to William Hodges. The epistle praises Hodges' work as an artist, especially his artwork depicting subjects hitherto foreign to Britain. The focus of the poem, however, is on Hodges' good health as compared to Hayley's own declining health; he laments his own battle with pain and disease and commends Hodges on not having his own work and mind diminished by a shattered body or dull decay. The poem is followed by "A Collection of Sonnets Italian & French," consisting of copies of 52 sonnets by various authors including Anton Maria Salvini, Francois de Malherbe, Jean Desmarets, Franco Sacchetti, and Guittone D'Arezzo.
