[Commonplace book], ca. 1744.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection primarily of biographical notes on sixteenth-century monarchs. The volume begins with a copy of The life of Henry 8th, written by Edward Herbert, 1st baron Herbert of Cherbury. This work is followed by The life of Edward the 6th by Baker and then by a Life of Queen Mary. Dos-a-dos is an essay in Latin titled De magnis sinubus oceani, as well as notes, in English and Latin, about the geography of Europe.

Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587), also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland, was queen of Scotland from 1542 to 1567. Through her husband Francis II, King of France, she was also briefly queen consort of France (1559-1560).
