An abstract of John de Castros voyage up the Red Sea, also of John Steels & other travellers in ye east, [18th century].

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a journal, with numerous corrections, of the journey of John de Castro, 4th viceroy of India, from Goa to Soez in 1540. This work is followed by extracts from other narratives of travel in the eastern hemisphere in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, including John Steel's journal documenting his travel from Asinere to Ispahan; Nicholas Whitington's from Amadabath to Tatta; Sir Henry Middleton's from Moka to Lenan; John Mildenhall's from Aleppo to Candahar; and Sir John Chardin's, among others. At the end of the volume are figures explaining miles between destinations; several small maps; and, pasted in, drawings of coins.

John Chardin was born in Paris and travelled in the Near East as a merchant and jeweller. He later settled in England and was an agent to the East India Company. Chardin was the author of Journal du voyage du chevalier Chardin en Perse & aux Indes Orientales, par la Mer Noire & par la Colchide (1686).
