[Commonplace book], circa 1749-1756.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of about a dozen prose extracts, many on moral or religious subjects. The volume begins with four sermons by Daniel Waterland, followed by a several dozen moral maxims by Francois de La Rochefoucauld, duc de La Rochefoucauld, copied from an English translation published in 1749. Other items in the manuscript include a copy of the 1744 translation by Henry Layng of Giovanni Battista Gelli's La Circe; an account of the trial of Corbet Vezey (1732); extracts from Commentaries by Sir Francis Vere; extracts from a biography of Philip, Duke of Wharton; an epitaph on Sir Dudley Ryder; and a short poem titled On viewing that noble structure the Foundling Hospital [London], August 22d: 1753.
