[Travel diary], 1777-1779.

Manuscript, in a single hand, documenting Wraxall's travels through Europe, with special attention to each city's buildings, military fortifications, and rulers. In the first section, titled "Journal from Berlin to Vienna," he describes Berlin as "to a soldier the first city in the world; to an individual deficient in those spectacles and amusements common in capitals;" he also relates anecdotes of the Prussian king and the Viennese court. The second section, "Loose minutes and anecdotes," a series of observations of important personages in Vienna and an account of the War of the Bavarian Succession, was published in the author's "Memoirs of the Courts of Berlin, Dresden, Warsaw and Vienna" (London, 1799), and a later revision of part of these notes, entitled "Vienna 1779," is also in the Osborn Collection (MS Osborn c25). The third section, "Journal from Vienna to Venice and Florence," contains descriptions of Italian paintings, sculptures, churches, villas, palaces, and Roman ruins.
