25 ALS, some of which are copies, not bound but numbered in chronological order. The frequent letters concern naval matters, provisions for the fleet, weather, dispatches and arrivals, and convoy of private merchant ships from India and China to the Island of St. Helena and other trade ports en route to England. Some letters mention Danish ships, and rerouting of some East India Co. ships to Brazil. Christian was Commander in Chief at the Cape of Good Hope in 1798, and Macartney was Governor.

A member of an old Scots-Irish family, Macartney studied at Trinity College (M.A., 1759) in Dublin. He was knighted and appointed envoy extraordinary to Russia in 1764 and, on his return, entered Parliament, becoming chief secretary for Ireland (1769-72).
