Phyllis, [1685].

Manuscript on paper, in several hands, of versions and portions of a long poem. The first gathering contains "Phyillis. Part I. Of Lyffe and Age" and 64 stanzas of "Part Second. Of fortune and Vertue." The second gathering contains far longer versions of Parts One and Two and is headed, "Phillis. In four Titles. 1. Age and life; 2. Vertue and Fortune; 3. Death and Resurrection; 4. Hymns and Prayers." The poem is followed by a note: "The rest is wanting, the Author being prevented by Death from accomplishing what he Designed under the third and fourth titles." This gathering concludes with a 22 stanza poem, "The Authors Contemplation of Mans life and Estate." The third gathering is headed "Supple[ment?] to Phyllis" and contains additional stanzas numbered and marked for inclusion in the first two parts. It concludes with a page of notes in another hand on "Labor whill it is day" and a receipt dated "December the 21, 1686" for "John Lasons wiffe."
