[Commonplace book], [late 17th century].

Manuscript, in multiple hands, of several dozen entries, primarily in Latin verse, and on such subjects as eloquence, art, and rhetoric. Titles of entries include Narratio de aquila et virgine: historico stylo expressa; Paupertas impedit artes; Natura est eloquentia unica magistra; and Nemo ad eloquentiam pervenire potest sine artis auxilio. Other items are dedicatory, including a panegyric to Philip Thomas Howard, Cardinal of Norfolk; Simon Ford's Carmen funebre, on the burning of Northampton in 1675, addressed to Sir James Langham; a Latin poem titled London quod reliquum dedicated to William Langham, M. D., accompanied by an English translation dedicated to Langham's wife, Mary (Coleman) Langham; and a Latin version of John Denham's Cooper's Hill dedicated to William, Duke of Devonshire. Also in the collection is an English poem titled The ghost of the late House of Commons to the new one appointed to meet at Oxford. The manuscript was apparently compiled by a member of the English College at Douai, and contains verse and prose by various members of the College.

The South Sea Company was founded in 1711 to trade with Spanish America, on the assumption that the War of the Spanish Succession would end with a treaty permitting such trade. The Treaty of Utrecht, 1713, was less favourable than had been hoped, but confidence in the Company remained artificially high.
