Commonplace book, [ca. 1637].

Manuscript on paper, in a single hand, of a collection of approximately 20 prose pieces, primarily on legal and economic subjects. Entries on include an abridgement of a report by Sir John Davies of cases tried in Ireland; L'Authoritie et Jurisdictio des Courts del Angleterre by Richard Crompton; and an essay titled Customes Payable Par Merchandises. The volume also includes an epistolary work titled The Elegant Combat Between Two Learned Frenchmen Mounsier Du Moulin and Mounsier de Balzac by Robert Codrington, dated 1634 and prefaced by a dedication to Sir Anthony Mildmay, as well as a page containing epigrams and a poem about welcoming death.

Sir John Davies (1569-1626) was a lawyer and poet. Much admired for his poem, Nosce teipsum, Davies made his way into the court of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I.
