[Commonplace book], [ca. 1708].

Manuscript on paper, in a single hand, containing about 74 entries of political prose, political and religious poetry, and religious prayers. Poems include Loyalty Confin'd by Hamon L'Estrange; Of A War With Spain And A Fight At Sea and an excerpt from To The King Upon His Majesty's Happy Return by Edmund Waller; The Asse's Complaint Against Balaam or The Cry of the Country against Ignorant and Scandalous Ministers by Lewis Griffin; several poems by Abraham Cowley; and verse paraphrases of psalms. Other religious entries include explications of Bible verses and numerous prayers, such as morning prayers, thanksgiving prayers, prayers for the Lord's Supper, and "A Prayer to be used in these times of Calamity." Numerous title pages in imitation of printed works appear throughout, such as those for William Oughtred's Description and use of the Double Horizontal Diall; Milton's Comus, and a "Discourse of the Cure of Wounds by Sympathy...Without any real applycation of Medicines to the part affected; but especially by that powder known by the name of Sir Gilbert Talbot's powder." Contains political and other poetry.
