[Commonplace book], [ca. 1640-1684].

Manuscript on paper, in more than one hand, of a collection of 73 primarily satirical and political verses, riddles, proverbs, copies of political documents and correspondence, and a journal recording the author's travels through France, the Netherlands, and Italy. Verse satire includes "Advice to a Painter to draw the Duke"; John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester's Farewell and Tunbridge Wells; and A New Ballade to the Tune of the Irish Jigg, followed by a note that "I had this Ballad of a bookeseller at the miter in Fleetestreete next the divell taverne (whose name I know not) on fryday Afternoone 6th June. 1684." Other political items include a speech by the king "to the Lords & Commons in the banqueting house at Whitehall Saturday 5th June. 1675" and a list of articles "exhibited by the House of Commons in Novr. 1667 agst. Edward Earle of Clarendon," accompanied by verses "On the Earle of Clarendon's Downfall."
