John Thomas diaries and account books, 1874-1885.

11 bound diaries, with brief entries by John Thomas in pencil, dating from 1874 to 1885. Each diary corresponds to a single year and notes Thomas's deliveries, travel, health, and the weather. No diary for 1881 is present. Each volume includes a section for accounts and memoranda which Thomas sometimes used. Diaries are predominantly Pacific Coast Diaries, published by A. L. Bancroft. Two bound account books, dated 1876-1877 and 1882-1883, record transactions related to Thomas's lumber business.

John Thomas, owner of a Nevada County lumber company. Moved to California from Boston, Massachusetts, as a young man in 1857 to prospect for gold. After seven years of mining, Thomas began working as a carpenter in Grass Valley/Nevada County mining camps. Established his own lumber company in 1874, supplying residents and mining companies of Nevada County, Calif., with timber and firewood.
