[Letters to Stephen Simpson], Hardwick and Oxford, 1771 Dec 29-1772 Sep 2.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of copies of 15 letters written by Larogue to his close friend, Stephen Simpson, before and after attending Lincoln College, Oxford University, as an undergraduate. Many of the letters discuss his flirtations with women, his descriptions and opinions of women's behavior, and other social activities, as well as an ongoing dispute with Dr. Edwards. In other letters, he describes college life; compliments Simpson on his own romantic affairs; and discusses his financial situation. The volume begins with a preface explaining Larogue's purpose in compiling the volume as a souvenir of his extreme grief over Simpson's death in a shooting accident. The letters are followed by a letter to Simpson's uncle, James Eyre, describing Simpson's death, and by a poem, "A Vision, inscrib'd to Miss--", which contemplates the virtues of his friend.
