15 ALS from J. W. Williams to Henry Elling, accompanied by an ALS from W. P. Smith to Mr. Jacobson, along with several receipts and miscellaneous papers, documenting Williams' business relationship with Elling. Williams owed money to Elling and his letters relay information about his ongoing attempt to pay his debt by raising horses on his ranch in Big Sandy, Montana. His letters are filled with details about the ranch's affairs, head counts of the horses, round-up and branding numbers, and pleas for help to pay his men's wages. A letter dated 1896 Nov 14 describes the results of Williams's horse drive to Leeds, North Dakota. Another drive is described in letters from May and June of 1897. The last letters and several of the miscellaneous records pertain to promissory notes that Williams received in Benson County, North Dakota which Elling was having difficulty collecting. The collection also includes receipts for payments that Williams made to Elling, as well as an 1896 balance sheet of transactions between the two men.

Henry Elling was born in Germany on December 9, 1842. After the death of his parents when he was about 15, he emigrated to the United States with a younger brother. The two boys settled in Missouri to live with an older brother. While learning English, Henry supported himself working as a farm laborer. He then secured work in a mercantile business.
