Augustus Hopkins Strong was born on August 3, 1836, in Rochester, New York. His father, Alvah Strong, was one of the original settlers of that town and one of the founders of the Rochester Theological Seminary. Augustus graduated with the Yale College class of 1857 and then entered the school his father helped found.
