Miscellaneous papers of E. H. Knight, mostly relating to his year at Yale College, 1897-1898. Included are nine notebooks with his notes on the lectures of William Lyon Phelps, Oliver H. Richardson, William Graham Sumner and A. M. Wheeler. In addition there is a history paper by Albert R. Palmer (Y.1901), correspondence relating to Knight's admission to Yale, two family letters, college memorabilia and a genealogy.

William Lyon Phelps was born in New Haven, Connecticut, on January 2, 1865. He received a B.A. degree from Yale in 1887, an A.M. degree from Harvard in 1891, and a Ph.D. from Yale in 1891. Phelps taught English at Yale from 1892 until 1933 and was a popularizer of literature through his public lectures, radio addresses, and syndicated newspaper columns. William Graham Sumner was born in Paterson, New Jersey on October 30, 1840. He graduated from Yale University (B.A., 1863) and studied in Europe (1863-1866). He served as a tutor at Yale (1866-1869) and was ordained as a priest of the Calvary Church in New York City in 1869. John Christopher Schwab was born on April 1, 1865, in New York City. He received degrees from Yale University (B.A., 1886; M.A., 1888) and the University of Göttingen (Ph.D., 1890).
