Nearly 70 holograph letters from Charles Murphy to his wife, and three letters to his son Freddie. He describes life in camp, society in Fort Leavenworth, conditions in Yuma and surrounding towns, work at Angel Island. He comments on the European War in September and October 1914, mentions a meal shared with Douglas MacArthur in 1911, and a meeting with General Pershing in 1915. In 1914 he describes a trip made with three famous westerners: 'Arizona' Charley Meadows (of the Buffalo Bill shows), Lem Prebster (who took Kermit Roosevelt on hunting trips), and Miles Archibald (U.S. Marshall). Much of the content of the letters centers around his desire to reconcile with his wife after troubles early in their marriage. Accompanied by two letters, one from "Margaret" in Nogales Arizona, one from William Penn Humphreys dated November 1916 concerning his appointment of Judge Advocate in a court-martial; a photograph of Charles and two others in Yuma; and a printed special order appointing him judge advocate for a court-martial in 1917.
