John Whitney Hall was born in Tokyo, Japan, on September 23, 1916. He received his A.B. degree from Amherst College in 1939 and a Ph.D. degree from Harvard University in 1950. Following his graduation from Amherst through September 1941 he was an Amherst representative and instructor in English at Doshisha University in Kyoto. He was on the faculty of the University of Michigan from 1948 to 1961 where he also served as director of the Center for Japanese Studies from 1957 to 1960. In 1961 Hall w...
