Holograph writings of Downie's experiences as a gold miner, including the 199-page "Reminisences [sic] of Camp Life and Explorations Hunting Gold in the Early Days of California," signed by Downie and inscribed on the last page to "His Excellency Governor [James] Douglas C B etc. etc."; the thirteen-page "A Narrative of a Trip to Panama,"; and the four-page "Lynching a Beauty." Also included is a holograph signed "Official Report to the Hon. John Robson, Minister of Mines," dated 1886 Aug 6th, Victoria, of Downie's observations during his prospecting tour through the Granite Creek District in British Columbia; a holograph copy of a letter to Messrs. Henry and John Shuber dated 1875 Mar 17, at "Horcansists" in Panama, reporting on a copper mine he agreed to examine for the Shubers; and a copy of a letter to Colonel E. Bulkeley, Chief Superintendant of the Russo-American Telegraph Company dated 1865 Apr 7, Victoria, reporting on "the country lying between Fort Alexander and the Russian Possessions." A letter to Downie from James Galloway dated 1892 Apr 16, Sattley, discussing details of their mining experiences accompanies the Downie writings.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1819, Downie worked as a sailor before joining the Gold Rush in San Francisco in 1849. He mined near Sacramento and along the Yuba River in California, in British Columbia (where he also studied the Canadian Indians and made reports about the topography of the land around the Skeena River), and in Panama.
