Twenty-seven letters, most ALS, written by Jonah Newton Davis to his cousin, Rollin C. Newton, of Woodbridge, Connecticut. Most letters are dated 1893-1915, at Wetaskiwin, Alberta, or Minneapolis, Minnesota. These letters concern his work as an agent for Jas. McMillan & Co. and McMillan Fur & Wool Co., Minneapolis, for which he bought furs in Wetaskiwin; impressions of Wetaskiwin and Edmonton, Alberta, including description of farming, livestock, and city growth; news from Woodbridge and memories of his early life there; and family news. Several letters enclose printed promotional material issued by the McMillan Fur & Wool Co.; also included is a printed circular letter issued by the Company, number 269, Mar 9, 1914, sent by Davis to Newton. Also present are an ALS to "Dear Friends," Tipton, Missouri, 1861, regarding his experiences while working for the United States Army Commissary of Subsistence in Missouri during the Civil War; an ALS to "Aunt Martha, Rollin, and Family," with sections dated at Helena, Bozeman, Livingston, and Billings, Montana, and Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Feb 1-Mar 3, 1886, describing his impressions of these places; a fragment of an ALS, undated; and a photograph of Davis, 1906. Letters are accompanied by twenty-four envelopes. Some letterheads and envelopes include printed illustrations of hotels in Alberta, Canada, and Chicago, Illinois. The letters are accompanied by a typed transcript of excerpts, made by Helen F. Newton, daughter of Rollin C. Newton.
