Arthur Twining Hadley was born in New Haven, Connecticut on April 23, 1856. He graduated from Yale in 1876, and pursued graduate studies in political economy at the University of Berlin. In 1879 Hadley returned to Yale and worked as a tutor in Greek, logic, Roman law, and German until 1883. From 1883 until 1886 Hadley served as an instructor in political science under William Graham Sumner. Kingman Brewster was born in Longmeadow, Massachusetts on June 17, 1919. He received his undergraduate degree from Yale in 1941 and his law degree from Harvard in 1948. Brewster taught law at Harvard from 1949-1960. He served as provost of Yale from 1961-1963 and was president of Yale from 1963-1977. Brewster was U.S. ambassador to Great Britain from 1977-1981.
