Documents relating to letters patent issued to Stephen Randoll Smith, 1854-1857.

Two printed documents on vellum, completed in manuscript in an unidentified hand. One document, incomplete, grants letters patent to Smith for an invention for "improvements in vessels and apparatus used for raising sunken vessels and other bodies in the water and for lowering materials for structural purposes in water." The document was issued by Queen Victoria, 1854, and was registered and signed on verso by a clerk at the Office of the Commissioners of Patents for Inventions, Mar 28, 1857. The second document specifies required description and fees, Apr 5, 1854, possibly for the same invention. Accompanied by a wax impression of the seal of Queen Victoria.
