ALS to Henry Beebee Carrington, Mar 13, 1895, and ALS to the family of Samuel Francis Smith, Jul 8, 1896. Letters are written from Osaka, Japan, where Towson apparently worked as a missionary, and concern Japanese patriotic song texts collected by him and his interest in obtaining a holograph copy of Smith's text for the patriotic song "America." Related materials are two transliterated texts and an English translation of Japanese patriotic songs, written in manuscript in an unidentified hand, undated, possibly enclosed with his letter to Carrington; and a printed "Centennial Stanza" written by Smith for "America," Apr 30, 1889, and an envelope, undated, both with brief manuscript annotations, possibly written by Carrington. Accompanied by an envelope addressed to Louis Keller, Apr 16, 1894, possibly written by Smith; and a TLS from Edward Moore, Chicago Tribune, May 16, 1935, and a TLS from Carolyn E. Jakeman, Harvard University Library, Mar 27, 1945, both to L. J. Keller in reply to Keller's questions regarding text and music of "America."

Early life Carrington was born in Wallingford, Connecticut. An ardent abolitionist in his youth, he was graduated from Yale University in 1845. He was professor of natural science and Greek at the Irving Institute in Tarrytown, New York from 1846 to 1847. Under the influence of the school's founder, Washington Irving, he subsequently wrote Battles of the American Revolution, which appeared in 1876.
