Letter : Newark, New Jersey, to Marston Niles, 1874 Aug 13.

ALS in which Frelinghuysen discusses writing a letter to the Secretary of the Navy and obtaining an audience with the President on behalf of Niles and his brother Nathaniel who are seeking government funding for an expedition to Alaska by a group of Icelanders. The letter is tipped in the publication Alaska, a forty-eight page expedition report in Icelandic dated 1875, by Jón Ólafsson, which is bound with a separately published six-page English translation of chapter eight of the publication. Entitled Report of the Icelandic Committee from Wisconsin on the Character and Resources of Alaska, it is addressed to Ulysses S. Grant by Jón Ólafsson, and printed by the U. S. Government Printing Office in 1875. A manuscript note signed by Nathaniel Niles on the title page of the first report states that the report contains the findings of an expedition which came about due to the efforts of M. N. [Marston Niles] and N. N. [Nathaniel Niles].
