Letter : Washington (D.C.), to General James Shields, 1848 Aug 17.

AL in secretarial hand signed by President James Buchanan with which Buchanan confirms Shields's appointment as Governor of the Territory of Oregon. Buchanan notes that he is enclosing his commission and a certified copy of the "Act to establish the Territorial Government of Oregon," however, neither of the two enclosures are present. Buchanan also states that Joseph L. Meek has been appointed Marshal of the District of Oregon and that he requests that Shields accompany Meek to Oregon immediately.
