George William Baird letters relating to his application for promotion to general : Chicago, Illinois, 1897 Mar.

Holograph manuscript drafts of two letters written to the Adjutant General of the United States Army and to Senator J. R. Hawley relating to Baird's application for promotion to general. In his six-page draft to the Adjutant General dated March 1897, Baird submits a statement of his military service and asks to be considered for promotion to a general officer. Baird describes his active service in the Civil War and in various campaigns of the Indian wars in Kansas, New Mexico, Indian Territory, Texas, and Montana, under the command of Generals Hancock, Miles and Brooke. Baird writes a four-page draft to Senator Hawley on March 30, 1897, to request his support for promotion, noting that General Alfred H. Terry had written a letter of support before his death. Accompanied by a typed carbon transcript of Baird's letter to the Adjutant General.
