Typescript copy of a diary kept by Edward Shelley while travelling in the United States and Canada, Aug 22, 1861-Feb 10, 1865, possibly prepared by Herbert O. Brayer, ca. 1950s. Shelley arrived in Quebec in Sep, 1861, spent several months in Saint Louis, Missouri, and in Illinois, and went west through Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana. Entries describe Shelley's camping and hunting experiences and his impressions of American Indians, particularly relating to warfare between Indian tribes and his experiences while travelling with Piegan Indians as an adopted brother of their chief. Shelley returned to Saint Louis in Apr, 1863, travelling down the Missouri River. In Jun, 1863, he departed Chicago for Canada and the Pacific Northwest; entries include his impressions of Hudson's Bay Company forts and Canadian Indians. Entries for Dec, 1864-Feb, 1865 briefly describe travel by ship to San Francisco, Panama, New York, and return to England. Shelley also briefly discusses news of the Civil War and effects of the War in Saint Louis.

Herbert Oliver Brayer (1913-) was an American historian during the twentieth century. An expert on the economic history of the American West, Brayer was born in Montreal, Canada and educated at the University of Southern California and the University of New Mexico.
