Manuscript copies, in English, of letters written by Mexico City merchants to their correspondents in Mazatlán, by military officers including General Winfield Scott and General Santa Anna, and U.S. and Mexican officials; official Mexican documents; and extracts of Mexican and American newspaper articles regarding the progress of the Mexican War, with comments by the unidentified transcriber/compiler. The material, which is in English, was grouped into numbered "sheets" and sewn into a paper cover. Topics include General Scott's defeat of General Gabriel Valencia; the defeat of Santa Anna at Churubusco; the ratification of an armistice; the meetings of U. S. and Mexican commissioners in Atzapazcalo to discuss a peace agreement; General Scott's attack at Fort Chapultepec after Santa Anna broke the terms of the armistice, and his taking of Mexico City; and news of General Zachary Taylor. Accompanied by an unaddressed and unsigned autograph letter from Mazatlán dated January 6, 1848, in which the writer describes the political situation in Mazatlán and Mexico City, and mentions U.S. and Mexican military actions in Mexico and California.

Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), the twelfth president of the United States. In 1841, he was appointed to the command of the Sourthern Division of the United States. In the spring of 1845, Taylor appointed to command the Army of Occupation stationed in Corpus Christi. In May 1846, Taylor led his army into north Mexico.
