Nettleton and Philips family correspondence, 1820-1868.

The collection consists of 10 ALS, including a single letter that is particularly detailed, and a religious diary. There are three letters by Nettletons: one, dated Dec. 18, 1864, is written by Elliott to his brother George. He describes in detail his part in Sherman's March to the Sea, and includes mention of the numerous slaves attached to the Army. A letter from Clark in Ruby City, Idaho Territory to his mother is dated May 28, 1865, and discusses burial arrangements for Elliott. Another letter dated Oct. 20, 1868, is from Clark at Butte City, Montana to his mother and mentions the purchase of mining ground in Helena City and refers to the coming national election. Accompanied by a letter to Sarah Wilmot from her daughter Julia dated Oct 11 1820 and of largely religious content. Six letters, dated between 1822 and 1831, are between Charles and Patty Philips while Charles was trading in Trinidad and Grenada. Most are written by Charles and carry a great deal of religious content. A related item is a 6 page religious diary, undated, probably written by Patty Philips.
