Samuel Ryan Curtis correspondence, 1823-1837 (bulk 1823-1831).

The collection contains 39 letters, all but five addressed to Curtis from his family and friends, many of them from his brother Henry. Five letters are written by Curtis himself. The letters from his brothers and parents carry local news and advice to Samuel about how to behave, who to work for, and how to do well at West Point. There are several letters from Robert McComb of Mansfield, offering Curtis a job, and after Curtis accepted, several more directing the business while McComb was away. A fragment of one letter written by Curtis is to his brother Hosmer telling him of this job offer. Two more letters are written by Curtis to his classmates at West Point regarding school matters. In one, dated January 30, 1831, he attempts to resign, angered at an appointment another classmate received. Two more letters are written to his wife, one from Camp Catherine in 1836, another from McConnelsville, Ohio in 1837 while he worked in the Engineer Corps of Ohio.
