Jacob Merritt Howard collection of documents and letters relating to the Strangites, 1851-1856.

Indictments, warrants, depositions, petitions, and letters relating to murder of Thomas Bennett, prison rescue of Hezekiah D. McCulloch, and other activities of James Jesse Strang's Mormon colony on Beaver Island, Michigan. The indictments and warrants are for James Jesse Strang, Hezekiah D. McCulloch, William Chambers, James W. Gregg, and Jackson Porter, and are signed by Jacob M. Howard and by Henry W. and John W. Granger, Sheriff and Deputy of Mackinac County. The collection includes two petitions from counties around Beaver Island complaining of the Mormon depredations sent to Governor Kingsley S. Bingham. With four apparently unrelated letters to Jacob M. Howard regarding election strategy and the disappearance of the schooner Robert Willis.
